The Real Cost of the U.S. Visa Bond
The U.S. Visa Bond Pilot Program is often described as a refundable deposit, and technically, that’s true. In practice, it’s more complicated than that.
Bond amounts run from $10,000 to $15,000 per adult, with minors sometimes assessed at $5,000. The requirement is per person, not per family or group. A family of four could have $20,000 or more tied up for months while awaiting a refund after departure.
Beyond the financial piece, the timing creates its own problems. Because the bond is determined after the consular interview, it converts what should be a routine approval into a conditional one requiring additional administrative steps. When you are traveling for an event or specific date, added processing time can mean missed or canceled plans.
There are also restrictions on how bondholders can enter the country. Private aviation, charter flights, land crossings, and seaports are not permitted. Entry must be through a designated commercial airport.
And once you’re in, the visa is single-entry with a 30-day admission cap, with no provision to extend your stay.
